Description

Anti-Connexin-50 (Cx50 or Gja8) antibody is validated on mouse tissue and can be used for immunofluorescence labeling, IHC, or western blot of materials from rodent and human tissues. Connexins are the structural proteins making the gap junction. Each gap junction is composed of two hemichannels, or connexons, which consist of a hexameric assembly of connexin proteins. Connexin-50 is encoded by the Gja8 gene in human. Connexin-50 is also known as gap junction protein alpha 8. Connexins have four transmembrane domains, two extracellular loops, amino- and carboxyl-terminal cytoplasmic domains, and a cytoplasmic turn motif. Connexin-50 is necessary for lens growth and maturation of lens fiber cells. Connexin-50 is also expressed in the retina. Mutations in Gja8 are associated with zonular pulverulent cataracts, nuclear progressive cataracts, and cataract-microcornea syndrome (OMIM 116200).
